Our History

How it all started...

Early in 1913, several families realized the need of a Church in the southern area of Winston-Salem. They met in a grove near the south end of Urban Street and then moved to an empty house close by. The congregation was known as “The Church of Christ Mission.”

They quickly outgrew the space and leading members along with Fourth Street Church of Christ worked together to construct a new building. The congregation, now known as the Urban Street Church of Christ, began worshipping in its new building on Sunday, June 14, 1914.

Expanding the vision...

In March of 1915, the Urban Street building and property were exchanged for the property of the Southside Methodist Evangelical Church at the corner of Sprague and Dacian Streets. The congregation was now known as Sprague Street Church of Christ. It continued to grow and expand throughout the decades. The Church was instrumental in establishing new congregations in the area.

In the mid-1960’s, the Sprague Street congregation felt they had reached their potential and started looking for a new location. Land was purchased, construction began, and Pinedale Church of Christ opened its doors in 1968 at the current location.
